Delhi, India is well known to have bad air pollution due to its location in the Indo-Gangetic plain, hemmed in by regional mountain ranges that restrict the horizontal flow of wind. This year, in 2026, the North Atlantic right whale calving season produced 23 calves, the highest number recorded since 2009. The recovery is being driven by measures targeting the two things that kill and injure most right whales: vessel strikes and fishing gear entanglement. To sum up the measures that have helped the whales have a good season is the implementation of measures to move ships around the calving areas, and also have them slow down.

Given that there are 380 North Atlantic right whales left, the arrival of 23 calves is good news and hopefully the start of an upward trend.

England Refines Biodiversity Standards

The rush in to Biodiversity Credits is causing backlash around the world given that this credit category is new and not well defined. England just took a step toward fixing the issue and revised Biodiversity Net Gain framework. It took effect August 6, streamlining requirements while raising standards.

England has “BNG Habitat Banks” which are “Biodiversity Net Gain Habitat Banks”—a piece of land managed to create measurable improvements in biodiversity. They can sell biodiversity units to organization or corporations who need to meet their mandatory 10% biodiversity net gain requirements under England’s planning system. Habitat Banks manage the area of land where new habitats—like meadows, woodlands, hedgerows, and ponds—are strategically added and managed for the long term to help biodiversity flourish.

By creating a regulated supply of verified habitat credits through 30-year management agreements, England’s revised framework establishes clearer standards and market transparency for biodiversity offsetting—moving away from the ambiguity that has fueled criticism elsewhere.
